Atomic Blonde – 4 out of 5

You really can’t beat a good kickass action flick featuring a cool central character, a slick presentation and a killer soundtrack.  There’s something inherent about them that makes them fun despite the fact you are witnessing things that would be terrifying and horrific to see in real life.  Atomic Blonde is one of those films that delivers a cool main character, action scenes that made me say, “Noice!,” and a soundtrack overflowing with classic and iconic tunes!

Daniel Bernhardt has a great fight scene in this movie but it doesn't compare to
his great fight in Barry.  Seriously, check that show out if you haven't!

"You should see the other guy.  Oh wait, you can't.
They're dead.  Because I killed them."
At the end of the 80s, a document called “The List” ends up missing in Berlin.  “The List” contains the names of all the intelligence agents currently active in the area.  MI6 spy Lorraine Broughton (Charlize Theron) is sent in to work with MI6 Station Head David Percival (James McAvoy) in order to recover “The List.”  Lorraine soon learns “The List” has been memorized by a Stasi officer codenamed Spyglass (Eddie Marsan) and she must now get him out of East Berlin but what she doesn’t know about those around her and those she is working with could end up killing her.

Lorraine could kick my ass a million ways and then she shows me up by submerging
herself in ice water--something I'm too weak to do!

Pennywise cleans up nicely.
For the most part, Atomic Blonde is firing on all cylinders and delivers something very entertaining.  First off, the action is very satisfying.  Charlize Theron looks all kinds of badass as she shoots, punches and kicks her way through the bad guys and with top notch, amazingly executed and crafted fight choreography.  To make the sequences even more memorable, they are all filmed in a way that makes them a feast for the eyes.  The film is already gorgeous to look at as it does a tremendous job at using color and lightning but camera angles and movement play a major role in making these fight scenes extremely dynamic.  For example, the cream of the crop with this element is a stairwell brawl in an apartment building and it is designed to look like it is done in a single take.  The camera is constantly swirling and circling the action and it made for a very active fight scene rather than something passive to just sit and watch.

I know the characters exist in different time periods but can we have Lorraine
travel through time and team up with John Wick?

The cast for this one is just absolutely excellent.  Charlize Theron is such an incredibly versatile actress that it is no surprise that she can pull off the badass spy…and make no mistake about it, she is all kinds of badass!  I really enjoyed the tilted performance of James McAvoy as it made him fun to watch but also a nice antithesis to the type of spy that Theron’s character is.  Finally, you got mega talents John Goodman and Toby Jones as the men who Lorraine is reporting to after her mission and just adding them to the mix is making an already great cast that much better.

"...but the shopkeeper and his son were a different story all together.
I had to beat them to death with their own shoes."

The only real drawback I found for this one is the story can kinda feels underdeveloped in-between the ass kicking scenes and sometimes drags.  The film never gets boring but it doesn’t quite have the grab and intrigue that other spy thrillers contain.  Sadly, sometimes these story elements kinda feel like they are going through the motions and that often causes the development sequences to be a tad on the boring side.

Oh McAvoy, you never bore me.

Atomic Blonde looks great, sounds fantastic and is an injection of adrenaline when it concerns the action.  It has some flaws with its story and development but visually it’s a feast for the eyes, the action is top notch, the cast is incredible and the soundtrack is absolutely killer and compliments the action and visuals perfectly!
