This is the best high school zombie musical ever. I dare anyone to contradict me.

The cover of the English DVD compares "Anna and the Apocalypse" with "La La Land". That's an unfair comparison. "La La Land" is an awful film, in which neither of the two main characters can dance skilfully. The actors in "Anna and the Apocalypse", especially Ella Hunt as Anna, are all exquisite dancers. This is what a musical should be like; even musicals that don't have zombies.

The Rotting Zombie's Round-up of Horror News for August 2019

Yet another month, and yet another round-up of all the horror news I have received this month. I'm getting towards the end of a rather dull week off of work, though still plan to get two more cinema trips for the couple of horrors that are out at the moment, as well as a birthday party I completely forgot about, which is happening as I type! It is a trailer heavy post this month, which was a pain as YouTube no longer works on my PC for some reason, I shall have to look into fixing that.

Last mentioned a year ago, Danish zombie film Escaping the Dead is going to be heading to North America with a release date of 1st October. This horror was written, produced and directed by Martin Sonntag and features a large cast of over 150 zombie actors, as well as Lloyd Kaufman and Kim Sonderholm (Harvest, Lucid). Escaping the Dead can be preordered here.



Indican Pictures are set to release 6 Hot Chicks in a Warehouse this September, which comes from director Simon Edwards (Blaze of Glory). In this action horror a group of female models are invited to the studio of photographer Adrian. However it turns out the man is quite insane and kidnaps the women with the intention of forcing them to fight each other to the death. This is due for release on 3rd September.



Also coming from Indican Pictures is Perfect Skin, a horror thriller from director Kevin Chicken and writer Dusan Tolmac. This is about a crazy tattoo artist who kidnaps a young Polish woman for his next experiment. This stars Richard Brake (3 From Hell, 31), Natalia Kostrzewa (The Looking Glass) and Jo Woodcock, and comes to DVD on 10th September.



Hex Studios (Lord of Tears, The Black Gloves) really love their Owlman creation, and they love making prank videos of him scaring unsuspecting members of the public. They have recently released a new prank video, the latest victims including a pizza delivery man, a plumber, and a clown.



Shudder and Terror Films have released a sneak peek clip from the third film in the Hell House LLC series - Hell House LLC III: Lake of Fire. This movie is set one year after the events of the second movie and sees a billionaire buying the titular cursed property as a place to hold his popular interactive show 'Insomnia'. The film comes to Shudder later this year, with the first two entries already on the streaming platform. Fingers crossed that this re-captures the magic of the first film in the series!



The latest film from Dakota Ray (American AntichristThe Acid Sorcerer) titled The Dark Days of Demetrius is due out in September. This one is about serial killer Demetrius (Ray) who has gained a kind of stardom from live streaming the murder of his victims online. Ray's movies always have a feeling of bleak nihilism to them, so I expect this will carry on this tradition. At some point in the next few weeks I shall be putting up a review of this one, so check back for that.



The final news for this month concerns horror film Killer Therapy which comes from Barry Jay. This tells the story of a disturbed man seeking revenge, whether justified or not on the family that is scared of him, and the many therapists who failed to cure him. The cast includes Thom Mathews (Return of the Living Dead, Friday 13th Part VI) whose appearance here marks his return to a leading role. This movie also features PJ Soles (Halloween, Carrie), Elizabeth Keener (The L Word), Ivy George (Big Little Lies) and Michael Qeliqi. Killer Therapy is currently in post-production and is due to premiere on the film festival circuit later this year.

BILLY THE KID VERSUS DRACULA - BLU-RAY REVIEW

American Werewolf in Paris (5 Stars)

My face is as red as the blood moon in the photo. Before starting this review I checked the last review that I wrote two years ago. To my great shame I discovered a spelling mistake. It's no use looking for it, because I corrected it as fast as I could. It's embarrassing. That mistake has been a blemish on my blog for the last 22 months. I'm begging my readers, please help me out in future. If you ever see a mistake in spelling or grammar, leave a comment and I'll correct it immediately. I want to be perfect, but I'm still far from my goal.

As I pointed out in my last review, this is a film that's universally hated, by critics and film fans alike. I seem to be alone in loving it. I make no apologies. I consider it to be a brilliant film, so if you don't like it, the problem lies with you, not me. If you haven't seen the film yet, watch it with an open mind. Tell me what you think. If you've seen it and don't like it, watch it again. It's not necessary to watch "American Werewolf in London" first. It parodies the first film, but it has a standalone plot, and it's humorous in its own right.

Paradise Hills (4½ Stars)

A young woman called Uma wakes up on a beautiful island. She's told that she's been sent to the island by her parents to learn good manners and how to behave like a fine lady. If that were all that's needed she might have accepted her holiday away from home. Unfortunately, part of the "behaving like a fine lady" means marrying the rich man that her parents have picked for her. When she makes it clear that she loves someone else, she has to undergo daily brainwashing sessions to persuade her to change her mind.

The island is full of young women who've been sent for reconditioning. Most of them would do anything to escape. The island's employees are all men. They act like servants and treat the women like royalty, bowing before them, but Uma suspects that the adulation is fake. The women on the island are the real slaves. She's warned by another woman not to drink the milk with the evening meal, because it drugs the women and makes them sleep all night. When she remains awake she sees that the island's men are busy all night, pushing the women on trolleys to rooms where operations are carried out.

That sounds sinister in itself, but there are even bigger secrets. I can't say too much, for fear of giving away spoilers, but I'll just say one thing. Uma begins to suspect that nobody who visits the island ever returns home.


This is a film that will probably miss its target audience. It's a very ambitious science fiction thriller, but on the surface it doesn't look like science fiction. It looks like a period film with pretty girls living a fine life. You need to be an insider to know what to expect. As soon as I saw that the screenplay was written by Nacho Vigalondo I knew it would be a mind-bending science fiction story. As the film develops, with one plot twist following another, the audience's imagination is stretched ever further. Maybe it's stretched too far. At first I wanted to give "Paradise Hills" a five star rating, but I deducted half a star because it goes too far.

I can't think of any other film I can compare it with. It's something that has to be seen to be believed.

iWant: Review of ABANDONED: Security Scares

Simone was a security guard whose record was besmirched when a violent robbery happened at the bank she was guarding. Desperate for a job, she accepted the night shift post to guard a creepy old abandoned building. She had strict instructions to make rounds of the premises every midnight and 3 am just when the ghostly activity is at its height. Meanwhile, Simone grappled with memories of the bank holdup, financial constraints and the strange behavior of her son. 

As writer-director Kip Oebanda wrote it, "Abandoned" did not only apply to the old building Simone was assigned to guard-- a former hospital where kid patients and the nursing staff were reportedly burned to death in a big fire. Simone was abandoned by the American father of RJ who impregnated her as a high school student, leading to her lack of a diploma. Simone abandoned her post for a while to answer a call from RJ just when the bloody robbery happened at the bank, causing her guilt and post-traumatic stress.

Beauty Gonzalez played the lead role of the tormented Simone. Left alone to fend for herself from a very young age as a single mother, Simone was toughened up by her challenging life circumstances. But behind that brave facade, she was full of frustration with the bleakness of her future. While she was probably doing her best in the lead role, Gonzalez did not exactly have a varied palette as an actress. She seemed overwhelmed by the production here like she is overshadowed by co-star Dimples Romana in their hit afternoon TV soap "Kadenang Ginto".

In his first movie role, former Pinoy Big Brother Otso housemate Seth Fedelin actually did well to create the confusing character of RJ. You never really knew what RJ was up to behind his mother's back. Fedelin managed to effectively portray a mysterious character who was apparently a good son at home, but who could possibly be up to no good when he was out of the house, certainly stirring up more stress in Simone's and the viewer's minds. This was a promising film debut for this young actor. 

Successful horror is all about developing the proper atmosphere. The old building was certainly creepy enough in the dark, but the production design people messed it up some more with details to make it look creepier. The cinematography and lighting were just right, not too dark. Then it was up to the director Oebanda to oversee his editing, sound, music and special effects technicians to create the palpable dread and sudden jumps in the final product. Beyond the scares though, Oebanda's twisted script gave the audience a bit more substance to chew on. 5/10.

Classic Movie Review: Gimme Shelter (1970)

Gimme Shelter is one of the great rock documentaries of all time – and one of the best “end of the 1960s” films ever made, even if they probably didn’t realize it at that time. It is a film about the Rolling Stone and their 1969 tour – climaxing with the now infamous concert at Altamount Speedway – where a member of the Hell’s Angels – who were hired to provide security for the concert – kills Meredith Hunter –a young black man, who tried to get up on stage, was beaten by the Hell’s Angels – and then pulled a gun, at which point a Hell’s Angel member stabbed him at least six times, killing him. The documentary crew – who filmed the mounting tension all day at the concert – capture most of this incident on camera. And the footage is shocking.
 
That is probably what the documentary is best remembered for now – nearly 50 years later. Well that, and the Maysles brothers (and Charlotte Zwerin) inviting the Stones into the editing suite to see the footage as they assemble it, to get their reaction – which ends up being shockingly blasé since they basically just watched one of their fans be killed. Like all the Maysles film, this is direct cinema – it captures the events as they happen, and doesn’t resort to talking heads, interviews, archive footage, voiceover, etc. to make their film. Still, it is a fascinating example of documentary ethics, playing out in real time in front of the camera – what footage do they use, not just of the killing, but of the Stones watching the killing. For a movie about the Rolling Stones in 1970, it’s surprising that there is no sex – or even talk of sex – in the film, nor any drugs – although you can certainly tell at times various members of the band are stoned, drunk or some combination thereof. If all of this was at the insistence of the band – in an attempt to try and protect their image – then it’s doubly surprising that they have seemed okay with the footage of them not really reacting to a killing in front of them. They have, after all, kept another documentary – Cocksucker Blues – pretty much unseen for decades because of the way they are portrayed in it.
 
Now, I should be clear – the film doesn’t really blame the Stones for the death that happened at Altamount. It doesn’t entirely let them off the hook either though. They were involved in setting everything up – it was supposed to be a kind of Woodstock but in California this time. We see famed attonery Melvin Belli (played by Brian Cox in Fincher’s masterpiece Zodiac) negotiating with people to get the concert up and running – to secure the Speedway, to find parking, etc. And when we get to Altamount itself, we see the growing tension and violence simmering all day. The lead singer of Jefferson Airplane is knocked out by a Hell’s Angel – the other members of the band call for people to calm down, to little avail. We see Jerry Garcia and The Grateful Dead show up – although when they learn about the Jefferson Airplane incident, they decide not to play themselves. As the day progesses, and the Hell’s Angels get more and more drunk – and violent (they come armed with pool cues), and the audience starts to respond– someone needed to step in before things got too far. And nobody did.
 
All of this is what I remembered about Gimme Shelter from my original viewing – probably about 20 years ago now. What surprised me watching it again recently is how much of the documentary takes place well before we get to Altamount. The concert footage at Madison Square Garden – which kicked off the tour – is pretty much given more time than the actual music from Altamount. It also contains the films most memorable music moment – not from the Stones, but from opening act Tina Turner, practically fellating her microphone. It also has footage of the Stones recording at Muscle Shoals – Wild Horses can be heard coming together. As much as Altamount is the star attraction to Gimme Shelter – it’s far from the only thing here.
 
And what’s even more fascinating is how the Maysles and Zwerin cram all this into just 91-minutes. The film accomplishes a lot in that time period – including being an unwitting portrait of one of the defining incidents that signaled the end of the 1960s, and the coming 1970s. It’s easy to see in retrospect that events like the Manson murders and Altamount really were the death blows to sixties idealism, and led to the rot and cynicism of the 1970s. They didn’t know that at the time – making this documentary even greater. For many Salesman or Grey Gardens is the Maysles masterpiece – either would be fine choices. For me though, it’s Gimme Shelter.

Observer (2017) - Horror Video Game Review (Playstation 4)

Observer is a game I have wanted to play for years, and in fact I have owned it for years. However every single time I have gone to play it something came up that prevented me from doing so, really has been strange the amount of times that has happened. Anyway, with a week off work I decided to finally plug myself into this cyberpunk horror.

The game takes place in 2084 in a dystopian future in which a global digital plague named the nanophage has killed thousands upon thousands of  augmented people. This resulted in a global conflict between the superpowers of the East and West which wiped them out. In Poland a mega corporation called Chiron took over the running of the country. You play as Daniel Lazarski (voiced by Rutger Hauer), an Observer based in Kraków. Observers are a special branch of the police force who have the ability to hack into peoples brain implants for interrogation purposes. One night you receive an urgent call from your estranged son Adam asking for help. You track him to a run-down apartment building in the Class-C part of the city (the poorest area). Arriving in his flat you discover a headless corpse, then before you are able to request assistance the whole apartment building is put into lockdown, with communication to the outside world cut off. Trapped inside with a killer on the loose you must investigate to discover exactly what has occured.


Some forms of media I find really affect me, and usually it is when situations match up with my experiences in real life. Being an introvert, and with my previously mentioned week off work I have become a bit isolated and kind of a shut-in. So to then play a paranoid psychological horror that takes place in a building under lockdown I become to feel like I was one of the tenants locked in their flats, and that any moment Daniel Lazarski was going to come knocking at my door. It also doesn't help that my first name is the same as his, on more than one occasion forgetting this I was perturbed by a character speaking to me by name! Observer is a hallucinogenic, technophobe first person horror game in which nothing is ever as it really seems.This bears a lot of similarities with other games of its type. It covers such topics as the underwater terror that was Soma did, but in a setting that felt more like Deus-Ex. There is no combat, I would use the term 'walking simulator' but that always sounds like an insult. On occasion there are stealth sections that pop-up but these are few and far between. For the most part you are walking around the claustrophobic maze like corridors of the apartment building, going door to door, speaking to the apartments residents through distorted, hazy video projectors.

Borrowing elements from Condemned: Criminal Origins the main aim of the game is to follow the clues to locate a killer. Like that game that leads to plenty of crime scene investigations that require you to use a variety of tools. At any point you can access augmented vision. Electromagnetic Vision scans for electronic devices, and Bio Vision scans for biological evidence. The biggest tool by far is the ability to hack into peoples minds, something which puts the unsettling atmosphere into overdrive with a series of what can only be described as nightmare sequences taking place in the dying or dead mind of one of the victims. These sequences are where the game really goes crazy, referencing yet another horror game these put the trippy world morphing parts of  Layers of Fear to shame. The world shifts and morphs into different environments, rooms pulsate, and the unification of biological and technological is put out in full force, narrow crawl spaces jammed with wires contrast with open hallways full of writhing fleshy tendrils giving a feeling of David Cronenberg's Videodrome. These sequences have the most puzzle elements as well. such as a room full of doorways that require a particular sequence to be able to exit, or a huge field of computer tape that must be traversed as huge drones with spotlights fly overhead. These were all crazy and distinct, but I did feel they all went on far too long for my liking, and was the part of the game where I would frequently get stuck for large chunks of time, unable to work out how to proceed, which occasionally led to frustration.


The plot of the game was interesting, the ideas put forward of augmentations making people less human, and the hunt for the killer were mostly explored well. Past the halfway mark though the game did become less interesting to me. The more you get into the story the more the fantasy world of the hacked bleeds into reality, with it becoming more and more dreamlike, leading you to question exactly what is real and what is a product of your technological side. This was all well and good but I did feel some of the atmosphere of the apartment block was reduced when nothing seems real anymore. I also didn't feel Daniel was that interesting a protagonist, he had a level way of speaking that didn't really make him stand out to me. Without going into spoilers I was disappointed with the endings here, it turns into a binary choice that results in a bad outcome either way.

I loved the atmosphere and the attention to detail here, it all looks and sounds fantastic with the feeling of horror always bubbling underneath. Those dream sequences did often run on for too long, and the story didn't really go in the direction I had hoped for. Still, this is a vastly underrated gem, for any fan of psychological horror this is something that you really should play.

Quick Sips - Tor dot com August 2019

One short story and two novelettes makes for a pretty standard bunch of fiction from Tor dot com this month. And the genres span science fiction and historical fantasy, with two pieces that look at how things might have been if magic (or superpowers) were a bit more real. And really in many ways the stories are about isolation, about people who are on the outside looking in when it comes to community and acceptance. Each has a place they feel like they belong, be it a physical location or personal relationship, and the works show how that effects their lives and decisions, how it leads some down some very dark paths, but maybe eventually into light. To the reviews!

Stories:

“More Real Than Him” by Silvia Park (7451 words)

No Spoilers: Morgan and Di are robot designers and programmers working for a large corporation. Both come from messy, traumatic family environments, and both have some serious intimacy and trust issues. They find in each other a kind of friend, a kind of rival, and their relationship in part circles a robot that Morgan has inherited from Di, who seems in many ways to be self aware and who throughout the story surfaces only briefly. It’s a portrait of the pressures the two women face, though, not just professionally (to succeed, to live up to expectations) but personally, to be “strong” and independent and self sufficient, even as both are desperate for connection and a bond where they can be vulnerable and safe.

Review: I really like the way this story builds up the characters of Morgan and Di, who people who have been betrayed by people who were supposed to be constant. Morgan’s mother. Di’s father. Holes in their lives that have left some deep scars and an aversion to intimacy. That has left both of them chasing after something that they suspect isn’t real. But that, too, might just be them holding themselves back from a possibility they can’t quite handle yet—that there is a way to break through their isolation, that there is a way to reach out to someone, to one another, and start to heal. I really like how the story shows the way that they begin to reconstruct their trust, the way each woman begins to open up to the other, caring more and more until they’ve created this deep bond that is still so fragile, undermined by jealousy and resentment. It seems real to me, because so often this is how people respond to being hurt, to losing someone who they had trusted completely. And where that puts Stephen, the robot that the two women create, is very interesting, because he represents someone caught in the wake of these cycles of trauma and pain. He’s viewed as a thing, and yet he seems to have this spark to him, seems to be self aware. It’s like the two women couldn’t even entertain that they might have brought real life into the world, because that’s something they aren’t ready for, something that’s complicated by the hurt they’ve felt and no doubt not wanted to pass along. But it’s a beautiful story that follows the two as they begin to confront some of their issues and open up about what happened to them. So that their wounds can stop festering and begin to close and heal properly. It’s not exactly a fun read, though it has moments of humor and a general messiness to the characters I really appreciate. It’s tender and it’s real and it’s very much worth checking out!

“Seonag and the Seawolves” by M. Evan MacGriogair (8456 words)

No Spoilers: Told as a story of an old narrator looking back on a time when they were much younger, this piece reveals wolves and hunters on a small Scottish island. The story is a memory, and a warning, and a wound that has never fully closed. It centers a young woman named Seonag, who was always viewed as peculiar, as different, as somehow foreign despite the island being her home, a place she loved above everything else. Despite the way that the people on it treated her. The narrator is a young person a bit infatuated by her, and drawn in as a witness to what happens to her. The story looks at freedom and wildness, at tragedy and violence and magic, and provides a stirring, chilling experience.

Review: I like how the story sets up this...almost reverse gothic mentality. The island and Seonag’s situation create a sense of isolation and danger, but it’s not that she’s sent out into the desolate countryside to fall victim to the strange supernatural forces there. No, rather it’s that she’s a native to this place that is full of darkness, where she’s never really safe because the men there don’t mean her well. And she has no interest in a protector, wants only to be free and to live in the place she loves. Only she’s continually kept out, othered, teased and gossiped about. When her family goes to move to Canada, one might almost expect she’d be happy to escape, only the land is a part of her. She stays, and in doing so she becomes “someone who’s running.” And it trips this switch in the hunters of the island, that she’s suddenly game. So she runs. And they follow. But again, where gothic stories tend to either feature a rationality winning over the supposed supernatural or else a kind of destruction, here it’s the rational and civilized that Seonag must reject, embracing instead the wildness that is her only freedom. If she’s to be game, then she’s going to be a dangerous kind, the kind with teeth capable of rending those pursuing her. It’s not a perfect solution, but it is the only one that allows her to remain free, and it’s the warning that she asks the narrator to deliver. That pushing people to the margins makes them targets for the hunters of the world. That it puts them in danger. And that when that happens, the outcome normally involves death, because with wolves and hunters, violence is pretty much a given. A stunning read!

“The City That Never Sleeps” by Walton Simons (11726 words)

No Spoilers: It’s a new Wild Cards story and Spector (formerly known as Demise?) has the ability to kill anyone he locks eyes with. It’s a useful power for an assassin, which is more or less what he’s been ever since his card flipped. After a particularly deadly falling out with his former boss a little while ago, though, he’s been trying to lie low. So when he finds out someone is following him, the same someone who got him into the big and bloody mess he’s still recovering from...well, he decides he wants to know more. The piece is violent and grim, embracing Spector’s particular brand of lack or morals or scruples. He kills for money and because he’s generally a mean person, and the story is certainly the more action-packed because of it, even if the larger story seems to still be hidden in the shadows.

Review: Most of the Wild Cards stories I’ve read have featured what I’ll call “good guys,” so to find this one centering a flat-out villain is an interesting mood. Unfortunately, the choice also comes with some added baggage, because while it’s different than I’m used to, I’m not really interested in getting into the head of a person who simply views human life as pretty worthless. He’s been through a lot and is living with constant pain from what’s happened to him, but at the same time it makes his entire motivation numbing that pain and taking out his frustration at that pain by killing whoever annoys him. Which ends up being a lot of people. Along the way he’s drawn into a number of plots, fights, and the rumblings of a coming war. The piece is set in the early 1990s or late 1980s going off of who’s playing basketball (which, I’m not going to lie, was a bit of a weird aside in a story that was mostly about assassinations and gang politics). And it’s certainly got its moments of fun, where Spector basically falls in with a large joker that looks like a newt (but is the size of a car) as the two have a drug and booze fueled outing not only through Jokertown but, as I mentioned before, at an NBA game that ends with a number of fans dead and Larry Bird almost retiring. So...it’s pretty odd as far as my experience with the Wild Cards stories is concerned. A number of locations are visited, and characters make their cameos. For Spector, the piece seems largely to be about him starting to work on his own, trying to survive and maybe find a way to be in less pain but really only succeeding in getting into more and more trouble and almost dying. A lot. Which is fine and fans of the series should find plenty to like. For my tastes I’m not really sure what to make of it, as I’m not a huge fan of the character and I really don’t get a larger sense of what’s going on so for me it’s a bit opaque and a bit unpleasant, but I definitely think people should check it out for themselves to see how it strikes them. Indeed!
