Thursday Movie Picks: Bookish Movies

Watch Movies TV -
It's the first Thursday Movie Picks of November, hosted by the wiser-than-I Wanderer at Wandering Through the Shelves. I love that our topic this week is so vague. Bookish movies. Hmm. Lots of directions to go with that one. Guess what, though. I'm still in October mode, so I'm going that way. That means YOU GET A HORROR FLICK!

AND YOU GET A HORROR FLICK!

AND YOU GET A HORROR FLICK!

EVERYBODY GETS A HORROR FLIIIIIIIIIIICK!

Se7en

(1995)

If you haven't seen this movie, stop reading this and find it. NOW! If you have seen it, you still might be puzzled about why it's here. Did you forget that a rather creepy collection of notebooks features prominently. Page after page is filled with meticulous handwriting. That's as much reason to pause as anything.

The Babadook

(2014)

Amelia is a widow living with her son Samuel. One night, he picks out a pop-up book called "Mister Babadook" for their nightly bedtime story. Even as she is reading it, things start to change. The lead performance by Essie Davis is amazing. She helps make it one of my favorite horror movies of the 2010s.

The Evil Dead Franchise

(1981-???)

This group of gory gut-wrenchers, two of which also happen to be laugh-filled, are centered around a book nobody has any business reading. It shows up in every movie of the franchise, the television series Ash vs. the Evil Dead, and is as much a character as anyone else. It even has crossover appeal, having appeared in the Friday the 13th movie, Jason Goes to Hell. This had lead some to suggest that it gave the murderous oaf his power. Hmmm.
