The Spy Who Dumped Me – 3 out of 5
The Spy Who Dumped Me sorta came out of nowhere for me. I never heard anything about a spy comedy starring Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon was in development and then one day I was at the theater and the trailer for it hits. It had my chuckling quite a bit and since I think McKinnon is one of the funniest people in existence, I knew I had to see it. While it wasn’t as great as I was hoping it to be, it was still pretty amusing.

Audrey (Kunis) is trying to get over being dumped via text by her boyfriend Drew (Justin Theroux) with the help of her energetic best friend Morgan (McKinnon). However, what Audrey doesn’t know is that Drew is actually a spy for the C.I.A. and he tells her that if anything happens to him, she must take one of his precious belongings to Vienna. After a hitman kills Drew, Audrey and Morgan flee to Europe and find themselves wrapped up in a dangerous adventure full of mystery and espionage.

The Spy Who Dumped Me shines strong with its comedic moments from Kate McKinnon and some very exciting (and surprisingly brutal) action. The movie also showcases some great chemistry between Kunis and McKinnon and they are legitimately fun together in the film. However, the film is hampered in a way that made this feature weaker than I was hoping for and a lot of this stems from the film’s length.

Clocking in at almost 2 hours, the film definitely feels long. While the story is engaging and enjoyable for the most part, there was no denying that there are times when the narrative felt like it was dragging to me and I got a little bored. When you factor in that I found the spy thriller elements of the story to be probably the least engaging of the movie due to them not being as interesting or as fun as McKinnon’s antics or as exciting as the action sequences, and it made for a movie that was pretty much nothing but peaks of fun and valleys of boredom.

| Fun Fact: I'm a huge fan of The X-Files and had a huge crush on Gillian Anderson. I had one and I still do too. |
I was hoping for a little more from The Spy Who Dumped Me. I won’t argue and say it was disappointing because it wasn’t. I found it very amusing, I loved the cast and the action was more exciting than I was prepared for. However, the story did have a bad habit of dragging and booting out my interest. Overall, it was entertaining but it lacked the magic ingredients to make it something memorable and something that warrants repeat viewings.
